Towards a thriving data economy: Volker Markl presents Big Data challenges to the European Competitiveness Council
In a further indication of the importance of Big Data on the policy agenda, RETHINK big's Volker Markl (Technische Universität Berlin) was invited to give a presentation to the European Competitiveness Council, which brings together brings together ministers responsible for trade, economy, industry, research and innovation and space from all member states, when the Council met on 3 March 2015. In his presentation, titled Towards a Thriving Data Economy: Open Data, Big Data, and Data Ecosystems, Volker discussed the technological and social challenges presented by Big Data, explaining the various steps of the data value chain and the multifaceted role of the data scientist. Emphasising how Big Data will revolutionise political, social and economic landscape in Europe, he ended with a call to action for policy makers, outlining the areas which must be addressed to create a thriving data ecosystem and mentioning the role of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for Big Data.
In a press conference following the meeting, Mārīte Seile, the Latvian Minister for Education and Science, said: 'Data-intensive research can become an important driver of innovation and growth if the righ pre-conditions are in place.'
