RETHINKING Big Data at the European Data Forum

Thursday, December 10, 2015

As one of the major events in Europe for discussing data issues, it made perfect sense for RETHINK big to attend the European Data Forum, which took place from 16-18 November 2015 in Luxembourg. Consortium members Ernestina Menasalvas of Universidad Politécnica Madrid and Stefan Manegold of Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica represented the project, presenting a poster in the exhibition and answering questions about the RETHINK big roadmap.

In addition to high-level policy statements on the importance of Big Data to the European economy, the event featured a number of interesting talks by European companies. Among these were Infineon, a business with a dual role as both technology provider and Big Data user, whose representative Stefan Rohringer explored the possibilities opened up by Industry 4.0, the role of Big Data in this area and related challenges, such as security. Thought-provoking applications of Big Data analytics were also shared by Lauren Sager Weinstein of Transport for London, who explained how data from transport cards is analyzed to help provide a seamless travel experience and improved customer service, while Elena Alfaro shared some of BBVA's techniques for generating revenue from data.

Presentations from the event are available for download from the European Data Forum 2015 website.
